Auditions
Admissions are decided on the basis of an audition. However, we are happy to hear prospective pupils play at an informal meeting and are able to give advice prior to the formal audition. Initial enquiries are welcome at any time with auditions held in early February and June.
Auditions last about 35 minutes.
Candidates can offer any instruments but are strongly advised to put most of their preparation time into their first study. It is better to shine in one area than to fail to demonstrate your musicality in two. If, however, two "equal" instruments are offered, that is fine and will be judged on the overall performance.
We recommend that the candidate present two contrasting pieces on the first instrument and one on a second study if it is offered. It is quite acceptable to present only part of a piece or movement.
We will look at technique, and appropriate scales and arpeggios or exercises will be requested. If a particular test causes problems candidates should not hesitate to say so and we will find more familiar areas. Candidates may hand in a list of the exercises which they have worked on if they feel it would be helpful.
Sight Reading – there will be at least half a minute for looking over the piece and candidates will be given the opportunity to do some "open" practice to enable them to demonstrate the ability to work on difficult areas. Think of it more as a quick study.
Aural Tests – candidates will also be asked to sing the higher and lower of two notes played together within the vocal range. It is essential to have a good sense of pitch and rhythm.
Finally there will be a short interview with questions about commitment and musical experience. We are looking for enthusiasm, single-mindedness, individuality and strength of character. Candidates will have the opportunity to put any questions of their own to the panel.
Results will only be communicated by post and we aim to let people know the outcome of the audition within a couple of days.
Candidates may bring their own accompanist. If not, but requiring accompanying please send a copy of the music at least 10 days in advance. In order to avoid unnecessary professional fees we will not provide an accompanist unless you request one. Please bring the original copy on the day.
We also run a Primary School Bursary scheme. Bursaries are awarded on merit and successful applicants have lessons here at the music school. Lessons are provided by a member of the ACMS staff as we do not pay for lessons with an outside teacher. Progress is reviewed every half tem or so and the bursary can be withdrawn if insufficient progress is being made. Candidates must then apply to ACMS in the usual way if they wish to join at the Secondary School stage. The Director is happy to discuss matters with parents at any time. The cost of these lessons is refundable to ACMS if the pupil does not apply to ACMS for entry into S1.
